Neropathy Relief Please Help

My 65 year old Australian father is a type 1 diabetic of some 41 years. He has been suffering from neuropathy for some time now.
He experiences pain, burning and itching in his feet. He has found a lot of relief wearing lycra socks which my mother made for him.
Would anyone have any ideas on footwear available which might be suitable for the relief of neuropathy symptoms?

We would prefer information relevant to Australia, but would appreciate any assistance.
